STORIA:

Agli inizi del '900 the government decided to construct new railway lines able to connect Cagliari with the mining areas and the island of S. Antioco . In 1911 the Company Investor Relations presented the project that the branch network of Royal Railways (Decimomannu - Iglesias) from Siliqua to Santadi through the crossing point Campanasissa, continuing up to and Sant'Antioco Calasetta. This path, including the stretch-Siliqua Cagliari, reaches 110 km.

The Sarde Southern Railway Limited Company was formed in Busto Arsizio the December 11, 1914, and April 20, 1915 was an agreement made with the State for the grant, construction and operation of a railroad Narrow gauge branch from Siliqua Calasetta with Iglesias for a Suergiu Palmas. Nine days later, the RD No. 666 made it enforceable.

Construction work could begin only in 1923 because of the war of the Great War and subsequent economic crisis . Then it took three years to achieve it. Along the line, were created several interesting works: five tunnels, 20 bridges and viaducts, 14 metal bridges, 343 aqueducts and bridges.

were also created 18 stations (all with wall decorations made by the famous painter Stanis Dessì ) 55 enclosure having four watchtowers.

The FMS began operation May 23, 1926 with the entire network.

(At the beginning of the rolling stock consisted of eight steam locomotives Breda, numbered from 101 to 108, 15 passenger coaches and 80 wagons. Communications along the network were covered by a special plant telegraph replaced later from its telephone network. )

Unfortunately, in the mid-fifties, the ' use of oil and its derivatives are replaced with cheap coal as main energy source, and decrees, in fact, the beginning of the final collapse of 'coal mining with the total closure of the wells that occurred at the end 60s.
For Southern Railway sardines was a terrible blow also because the collapse of the transport of coal, the main economic support of the Company, was accompanied by the rise of car ownership.
Despite the direct intervention of the state, there was the expected recovery due to the small number of passengers and dell'inutilizzo the rail carrier for transportation of goods ... To this was added to the first closing of trafficking Siliqua Narcao-caused work for the construction of the reservoir's water Bau Pressiu (13 July '68) and the closure of trafficking Monteponi-Iglesias (18 January '69) caused by the collapse of a tunnel.

CONCLUSION (AND ALWAYS HAD IN FEBRUARY):
now the rail service's days and February 4, 1974, the Exercise Director Mr. Giuseppe Cadeddu that it had issued the order for the integral suppression of the rail network Monteponi-Saint John-Saint John Suergiu and Narcao Suergiu Calasetta the day-February 5, 1974. The measure was not welcomed either by the workers, nor by the people, so that for the ministerial determination, we ordered the reactivation of the service with the new OS 7 February 1974. rail links had been reduced to a pair of runs using rolling stock that aging and times are no longer responsive to the needs of the few users who preferred the alternative route of the rail service that had, however, convenient times and were carried by bus brand new. The extension lasted a few months and, on 1 September 1974, in accordance with Law 309 of July 16, 1974, the final decision was made to terminate the Executive. The Southern Railway Sarde then suppressed by all the railroads and were replaced by buses on the road.
so ended the story of the "Railways Sulcis" decisive tool for progress and socio-economic development of the south west coast of Sardinia.

(News reported from the site of the FMS.)

TODAY:

Today this route is is easy and pleasant for walking , and given the great length the visit can start from different points . Unfortunately, the 'houses are in a state of obvious decay but still retain the roof and wall decorations, few points are still the rails.
awesome beauty and charm of tunnels, bridges and aqueducts still in excellent condition ... definitely a historical and cultural heritage around the whole of Italy and Sulcis!
